tyhtka: Lukasz “Dr.Luke” Gottwald – From SNL to Number 1
So, here’s the next remarkable Songwriter: Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald – also known as Dr. Luke or Doctor Luke, Luke Gottwald or Lukasz Gottwald. He often collaborates with Max Martin, for example for Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed A Girl”. He started his career as a guitarist for Saturday Night Life, is living in New York City, doesn’t want to listen to your demos any more and, oh, he’s a swinger according to his MySpace-Page!
In comparison to Max Martin, Luke is far more findable on the internet. As already mentioned he’s got a myspace-page and a website which is, uhm, “under construction” for months already. Nevertheless the person and his achievements in pop music are topics of this post, not his unfinished website. So, here we go again with the introduction of his Wikipedia-article:
Dr. Luke, also known as Doctor Luke, Luke Gottwald, Lukasz Gottwald, ([*26. September 1973, New York City] birth name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) is a musician, songwriter and producer who has written and produced for artists such as Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Jibbs, Lady Sovereign, Kelis, Avril Lavigne, Leona Lewis, Missy Elliott, Pink, Lil’ Mama, Katy Perry, Mos Def, the Backstreet Boys, Daughtry, The Veronicas, Carlos Santana, Vanessa Hudgens, and the Sugababes. Dr. Luke was the guitar player in the Saturday Night Live Band for ten seasons (ten years), leaving the band at the end of the 2006-2007 season.
He is known for writing heavy pop-rock songs and occasionally hints on taboo subjects.
Again, this is actually what you need to know about him. Although “Lukasz” sounds non-american, he was born and raised in NYC, yet the name is polish. He started with playing drums at the age of 12 and switched afterwards to guitar after having listened to his sister playing Ziggy Stardust. He then practiced to play guitar. His first solo was “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC. He learned punk/rock-songs from The Clash, Sex Pistols, Cars, Led Zep, Bowie, Jimmy H, Eddie V, Steve Vai… He was obsessed with it:
“I was already playing and doing sessions before I went to school.” ~Lukasz Gottwald
He then decided to go to the Manhattan School of Music (MSM) to learn jazz, although he didn’t know how to play it. So, the teachers depreciated him at first. He knew he had great guitar skills but unfortunately not the requested jazz knowledge. So he swotted till he was able to show off and “kick all their asses”.

“So I guess Manhattan School was good and bad: Good because I learned to play music I didn’t know how to play, bad because they didn’t respect any other kind of music and were super close-minded.” ~Lukasz Gottwald
I couldn’t find anything about how he got to SNL, yet I noticed while researching (“researching”=”googling”) that Google also googles for “Saturday Night Life” when you just enter “SNL” and it googles for “New York” when you enter “NYC”! Apparently Google is getting intelligent.
Nevertheless I found articles on gossip sites which accuse Luke of having stolen from songs for Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend”, but read Jig’s comment on this at first: She (or he?) has very conclusive arguments that this gossip is nothing more than gossip!
UPDATE: In Jig’s other comment you can read how he got to Saturday Night Life: “He got onto SNL by being auditioned, like anybody else would. He was recommended by some of his former teachers as a prospect. He was surprised that he was chosen since he knew most of the NYC guitar players and there were some that he thought were technically superior to him. He asked why he was chosen and they said that it was because he was photogenic, had a stage presence, and was also qualified musically.”

This is my wholly own, personal blog in which I blog whatever I want. Although I come from Germany I blog in English, simply because it's way cooler. Nevertheless I'm not that great English-speaker, that's why my English is creepily crappy from time to time.

So do you think anybody in the industry, the people who actually know him and his talent, would continue hiring and/or working with him if the gossip was true? If it’s gossip, which it is since it comes from the pages on the net where people just love to put people down, why do you promulgate it? Is this a gossip page as well? If you want people to take you seriously, don’t spread the gossip by linking to it.
Written 21.02.2009 11:31:25 / PermalinkIf you took the time and actually listened to the music in question and took the time to understand the allegations, which were dropped in a court of law, you would discover the absurdity of it and perhaps restrain from becoming an agent of gossip. Lukasz was a young boy when the song in question came out and it was not a hit. Not even close. If the same standards were applied to that song you would have to say that those people stole from the Rolling Stones, etc.
Avril had insurance to cover this and the people who went after her did it purely and simply for the money, and since Lukasz was a co-writer with her he was dragged into it. I guess you might see it as the cost of doing business in this day and age.
Avril is a consummate musician and composer and so is Lukasz. They are creative and free in their writing and, if you knew the process of writing a pop piece of music, you would see how contrived the idea of stealing in music is in that instance. Why would they bother, or take the time, to steal music? Do you think they ran out of musical ideas? These allegations were made before Lukasz had written, produced and collaborated on many more pop hits, hits that are wide ranging and creative. Do you think max would continue to work with Luke if there was a hint of truth in the gossip? The only truth here is that some burnt out musicians saw a chance of making and took it. They lost their integrity in the process, however.
Listen for yourself and see how crazy this is. Then think twice about linking to gossip… unless that is your goal, to become a gossip blogger, because if it is, I apologize for this comment.
Ok, I changed the article, refered to your comment, restated the allegation, so it doesn’t sound as if it was true, and used a tr.im-redirection, so Perez won’t get even more links referring to his site.
And now for something different: It sound’s like you’re coming from that biz! Do you? Your comment is very interesting and you seem to know more about Lukasz and Max than Google (what’s quite terrific) – so you must have at least profound fan-knowledge or more likely: Insider-knowledge!
Written 21.02.2009 12:57:36 / PermalinkSo: Who actually are you?! (Sorry for my importunity)
Thanks.
I don’t want to divulge anything about myself. I hope you understand. I know both Max and Lukasz and have followed their careers recently.
The reason I got so involved in the issue I commented about was because it was such surprise and disappointment to me when it first happened and I needed to educate myself about it. After I did that I was relieved to find out that it was bogus. But the way the internet works is that anything that has appeared on it seems to be there forever, sometimes undermining the truth and amplifying error.
Speaking of Lukasz, what drew me to your blog is that there is so little written about him and what’s on Wikipedia is very dry and devoid of any personality. Your blog is the first that focuses a bit on him and brings some character into it. Max has had a longer career in writing and producing music and so, understandably, more has been written about him.
I’m actually surprised that more people haven’t picked up on how amazing Lukasz’s career in music writing and production has been, considering how many top hits he has been involved with from Kelly to Flo Rida!
By the way, he got onto SNL by being auditioned, like anybody else would. He was recommended by some of his former teachers as a prospect. He was surprised that he was chosen since he knew most of the NYC guitar players and there were some that he thought were technically superior to him. He asked why he was chosen and they said that it was because he was photogenic, had a stage presence, and was also qualified musically.
Written 22.02.2009 15:57:26 / PermalinkFirst of all: Thanks for the nice words about my Blog! :) I have to admit that my Ryan Tedder post e.g. isn’t as good and full of character as this one. But I’ll consider your appreciations and will try to bring more personality in future Songwriter-posts.
But now again for something different: Uhm, I don’t know if I understand you correctly: With “I know both Max and Lukasz [...]” do you mean knowing like I know them (know their music and the things you can read here and there) or do you mean… knowing personally?! I can understand if you don’t want to divulge anything about yourself (as you say yourself the internet doesn’t forget anything and everyone advises you to leave as few marks as possible on the internet etc.), yet I’m pretty interested in getting to know that! ^^ Cause in the case you know them personally, there’s nothing more left to say than “WOAH!” – It would show that the internet is also able to serve its original purpose to connect people regardless of where they live or what position they’re in.
If you’re “just” a big fan like I am, it’s also cool, ’cause my friends are already tired of my jabbering about all these Songwriters ;) and so I’m glad to address people with this blog who are also interested in this topic.
No matter what the answer will be, I’ve quoted your explanation of how Luke got onto SNL in my post. By the way: This post has already become the most read post since this blog started one week ago! :)
Written 24.02.2009 13:11:59 / Permalink[...] with almost a hundred unique visitors! It was this post which also brought me my first comment: Jig’s comment. I don’t know who Jig is, but what she/he tells about sounds very interesting and profound. [...]
